Renowned gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53, marking the end of a vibrant music ministry that touched countless lives in Benue State and beyond.

A household name among gospel music lovers, New Jerusalem was celebrated for his unique fusion of Tiv Swange rhythms with powerful Christian messages, creating a sound that resonated with audiences both locally and internationally. His songs were widely regarded as spiritually uplifting and culturally grounded, earning him a loyal following.

The news of his death has drawn an outpouring of tributes from the Christian community and public figures. Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s home in Makurdi, accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group. Ortom, visibly moved, described the artist as “a devoted Christian whose music has left a lasting imprint on hearts.” He recalled seeing Ikyereve’s music played by a Tiv man during an Australian television programme, which he said highlighted the singer’s global reach.

Speaking during the visit, the late singer’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, expressed gratitude to Ortom for his consistent support during Israel’s illness. In a symbolic gesture of appreciation, he revealed that one of Israel’s sons had been named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s compassion.

Prayers were offered during the condolence visit, led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo.

New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, fellow gospel artiste Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, and their four children.

His burial is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
