Prisoner holding metal cage in jail, no freedom concept

A land dispute in Amaifeke, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, has ended in tragedy after a man allegedly stabbed his elderly father to death during an argument over the sharing of proceeds from a land sale.

The suspect, 39-year-old Ifeanyi Odinka, was arrested on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, by operatives of the Orlu Division shortly after the incident. According to the Imo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, the quarrel between father and son turned violent, leading to the fatal stabbing of 75-year-old Denius Odinka. Henry confirmed that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for further investigation and prosecution. Police have urged residents of the state to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest station.

Violence over land ownership and inheritance is a recurring problem in many Nigerian communities, often tearing families apart. In rural parts of Imo State, where land is both a vital economic asset and a marker of family heritage, such disputes frequently escalate into deadly confrontations.

Although police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding this latest incident, the killing adds to a troubling trend of violent crimes linked to property disagreements in the region.
