Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo made the declaration during an interview with Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami, on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM, monitored in Abeokuta on Saturday.
The former commissioner ruled out a return to the Senate or any ministerial appointment, stating that her political ambition is firmly focused on leading Ogun State as governor.
“I’m not going to be a commissioner, and I’m not going back to the Senate,” she said. “Like the Americans would say, there’s no need. From the beginning, I made it clear to my associates that the only position I would come back for is the governorship.”
She described her decision as a deliberate and well-considered move, adding that preparations for the governorship race were already underway.
“We have started that journey, and we are going to see it through. We are very serious and very dedicated to it,” Obasanjo added.
Obasanjo recently confirmed her defection to the APC, explaining that her return to active politics was driven by sustained pressure from supporters who believe she is well-positioned to lead the state.
According to her, a group of political associates had been mobilising for nearly two years before formally approaching her about the governorship ambition.
“They told me they believed I was the best candidate and wanted me back,” she said.
Her declaration is expected to further reshape the political landscape in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
