A tragic fire in Kundila, Layin Baba Impossible, Tarauni LGA, Kano State has claimed the lives of four family members, including a father, mother, and two young children.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, around 4:13 a.m., according to ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service. Firefighters were alerted after HFS Abba Datti, a member of the Emergency Response Unit, reported the blaze.

On reaching the scene, firefighters discovered a ground-floor apartment measuring 40 by 30 feet completely engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigations indicate the fire was likely caused by a mosquito coil left burning in the parlour before the family went to bed.

The apartment, which consisted of two bedrooms, a parlour, a kitchen, and a toilet, trapped five people: Shodandi, 43; Rafi’a, 30; Mardiya Shodandi, 3; Yusira Shodandi, one and a half; and Aminu Shodandi, 12. Four of the victims—the parents and two younger children—were killed in the fire, while the 12-year-old boy survived.

The Fire Service extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution during the harmattan season, when fire incidents are more frequent.
