Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political realignment in the state barely days after his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Yusuf’s return to the APC comes three days after he announced his exit from the NNPP, citing prolonged internal crises and lingering legal disputes that, according to him, had eroded the party’s unity and effectiveness at both state and national levels.
The governor’s defection had been widely anticipated. There were earlier reports that Yusuf was set to rejoin the APC following his resignation from the NNPP last Friday.
His move follows a wave of defections within the Kano State House of Assembly. Earlier on Monday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore; his deputy, Muhammad Butu-Butu; the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; and 19 other lawmakers formally defected from the NNPP to the APC.
Political observers say the mass defection significantly strengthens the APC’s influence in Kano and reshapes the state’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
