The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has thrown its full support behind Usman Bello-Suru, re-electing him as chairman in a move party leaders say will strengthen their chances of victory in the 2027 general elections. The decision was sealed at the state congress on Saturday, where delegates from all 21 local government areas endorsed Bello-Suru alongside 38 other executives. The congress, supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was widely described as peaceful and transparent, with State Delegates’ Congress Chairman Mukhtar Lugga declaring the process credible.
Bello-Suru, in his acceptance speech, pledged to rebuild the unity of the PDP and lead the party back to prominence. He assured members that the leadership would operate as one family, committed to restoring the PDP’s dominance in Kebbi politics. “We shall work together as one family to reposition our party and ensure the PDP regains its rightful place,” he told cheering delegates.
Key figures within the party also hailed the outcome as a turning point. Retired General Aminu Bande, a former governorship candidate, and Board of Trustees member Benjamin Dike praised the congress as proof that the PDP is regaining its strength and called on the new executives to embrace inclusiveness, foster collaboration, and mobilize ahead of the 2027 polls.
Several officials retained their positions during the exercise, including Hussaini Abdullahi-Raha as Deputy Chairman, Abubakar Bawa-Kalgo as Secretary, and Haruna Mai-Jega as Vice Chairman for the Central Zone. The re-election of these leaders, observers say, is intended to provide stability as the PDP works to rebuild its influence across the state.
Amid speculation of possible defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kebbi PDP has moved quickly to assure members of its cohesion. Bello-Suru dismissed rumors of disunity, insisting the party remains “one indivisible entity” and will continue to stand firm as a strong opposition across all 21 local government areas. He urged members to remain calm and steadfast, adding that the leadership is closely monitoring the political environment ahead of 2027.
The renewed mandate for Bello-Suru and his team signals a fresh chapter for the PDP in Kebbi State, with party leaders and supporters alike rallying behind a vision of unity, inclusiveness, and determination to return to power in the next election cycle.
