Former presidential candidate and national figure, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent classification of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” urging Washington to assist Nigeria instead of escalating tensions.
Trump’s comments, which have stirred widespread reactions across the country, suggested that the United States is increasingly worried about Nigeria’s security landscape.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Kwankwaso said he has been observing the U.S. president’s remarks “with growing concern,” noting that such labels risk deepening divisions at a time when unity is needed most.
He clarified that Nigeria’s security challenges are driven by criminal groups and not by tribal, political, or religious identities. According to the statesman, Nigerians from all backgrounds are affected by the violence that has plagued various regions.
Kwankwaso called on the United States to direct its influence more constructively by providing Nigeria with modern surveillance and defense technology to track and combat insurgents, kidnappers, and other violent criminals more effectively.
“Helping us strengthen our security response would be far more beneficial than threats that could heighten existing tensions,” he suggested.
He also urged the Nigerian government to strengthen diplomacy by sending experienced envoys to Washington and ensuring that ambassadorial vacancies are filled without delay, stressing that Nigeria must always protect its interests abroad.
Kwankwaso encouraged citizens to stay united despite rising concerns, saying the country must continue to act as one people in the face of domestic and international pressure.
“This moment calls for unity above all else. Together, we can overcome every challenge before us. God bless Nigeria,” he said.
