The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors and standard bus routes.
The approval was confirmed in a statement issued on February 23 by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the adjustment following appeals from regulated public transport operators.
According to the agency, transport operators raised concerns about the sustainability of services amid rising operational costs and ongoing economic pressures affecting the sector.
The state government said the fare adjustment is intended to cushion the impact of prevailing economic challenges on public transport operations and ensure continued service delivery across Lagos.
Under the new arrangement, the revised fare structure will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
Officials explained that the review aligns with the state’s previously approved annual fare review mechanism. The decision was also influenced by persistent inflationary trends, with Nigeria’s inflation rate closing at 15.2 per cent in 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The statement further noted that Bus Operating Companies have continued to face increasing expenses, including higher costs for vehicle maintenance, spare parts procurement, and staff remuneration, particularly following the implementation of the new national minimum wage structure.
