The Lagos State Police Command has detained officers accused of assaulting popular actor and skit maker, Ganiyu Morufu, popularly known as Ijoba Lande, following widespread public outcry over the incident.
The development was confirmed on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, who said the officers involved have been identified and are undergoing internal investigation.
According to Adebisi, statements are being taken from all parties, including the affected officers, the actor, and his companion.
“The officers involved have been identified and brought before the command for investigation. At present, the officers, the complainant, and his friend are all giving their statements. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” she said.
A video that went viral on social media showed the actor seated in a vehicle with visible injuries, including bleeding on the left side of his face and bruises, as he repeatedly asked for water. In the footage, bystanders attempted to console him and urged that the matter be reported at a police station.
A voice heard in the background alleged that personnel from the Area “J” Police Division carried out the assault, describing the incident as unjust. The clip later showed the group arriving at a police facility, where the actor appeared calmer.
The video’s caption further alleged that the entertainer was robbed during the incident, with his iPhone 16 Pro Max and $1,200 in cash belonging to his brother reportedly taken.
“I returned from the UK six days ago and was attacked and beaten by police officers in Nigeria. They took my iPhone 16 Pro Max and my brother’s $1,200. I nearly lost my life,” the caption read.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public that the case is being handled with seriousness and that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
