The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that workers approaching retirement receive their pension benefits promptly, provided their paperwork is complete and verified.
Speaking at the 29th Retirement Benefit Documentation Seminar held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, government officials assured participants that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains dedicated to the welfare of civil servants even after they leave active service.
In his remarks, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, praised the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) for maintaining an efficient and transparent pension administration system that makes retirement stress-free for public workers. He described the state’s continued effort to educate and prepare retirees as a demonstration of genuine commitment to the people who have devoted their careers to public service.
Agoro noted that the seminar, the third edition held in 2025, was specifically designed to equip officers nearing retirement with knowledge about proper documentation, financial readiness, and pension processing. He encouraged participants to pay attention to the sessions and ask questions that would help them avoid mistakes capable of delaying their entitlements.
“The Sanwo-Olu administration is unwavering in its dedication to your well-being, even after retirement. Take this opportunity seriously. Understand the processes, ask questions, and get it right so your pension can be paid without delay,” Agoro said.
Addressing the audience, LASPEC Director-General Babalola Obilana explained that the seminar was organized for employees scheduled to retire between January and June 2026. He said it was part of the government’s proactive efforts to ensure a smooth transition from active service to post-retirement life.
“This session is not just about paperwork — it’s about preparing you mentally, financially, and emotionally for the next phase of life. Retirement is not something to fear; it’s a new chapter that should be embraced with joy and optimism. It’s a time to redirect your energy toward activities that bring fulfilment and purpose,” Obilana said.
He emphasized the importance of early planning and financial discipline, urging participants to develop a positive attitude toward the changes that come with retirement. Lagos State remains committed to creating systems that ensure transparency and prompt payment of retirement benefits.
The seminar included sessions led by pension experts, annuity service providers, and financial advisers, who shared guidance on pension documentation, post-retirement healthcare, financial management, and legal matters. Participants were encouraged to plan ahead and make informed decisions to secure their financial future.
Through initiatives like this, the Lagos State Government continues to build confidence among its workforce and reinforce its reputation as a model for effective pension administration in Nigeria.
