The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce and Anti-Crime Squad have arrested a man accused of attacking and extorting a motorist whose vehicle broke down along the Oshodi–Iyana Ipaja Road.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the arrest in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday. According to him, the incident occurred on Wednesday, January 14, at about 8:30 p.m.
Wahab said the suspect, alongside other members of a gang who are currently at large, allegedly assaulted an unsuspecting motorist and forcefully demanded money after the victim’s car developed a fault on the busy road.
“Yesterday, at about 2030hrs, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce/Anti-Crime Squad arrested a suspect for attacking and forcibly demanding money from an innocent citizen whose vehicle broke down along the Oshodi–Iyana Ipaja Road,” the commissioner wrote.
He explained that operatives of the taskforce responded swiftly to the incident, arresting one of the suspects at the scene, while other gang members managed to escape.
The arrested suspect has been detained and will be arraigned in court as soon as possible, Wahab said, adding that security agencies are intensifying efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing accomplices.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly warned against harassment, extortion and attacks on motorists, particularly those stranded due to vehicle breakdowns, assuring residents of continued enforcement and surveillance across major roads in the state.
