The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified enforcement operations across Lagos State, arresting and dislodging illegal cart pushers accused of indiscriminate waste disposal.

The exercise, carried out by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement unit, targeted individuals allegedly collecting and dumping refuse at unauthorised locations, in violation of state environmental regulations.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Government, several suspects were apprehended during routine monitoring operations in areas including Anthony Oke (Newcastle axis), Ifako Gbagada, Alagomeji–Yaba and surrounding communities. Carts used in the illegal activities were also confiscated.

Authorities said the activities of unregistered cart pushers undermine ongoing sanitation efforts and contribute to environmental degradation, particularly in areas that have undergone repeated clean-up operations.

An official of the agency stated that the crackdown forms part of broader measures to restore order to waste management practices and sustain cleanliness across the state.

The government warned residents against patronising illegal waste collectors, stressing that compliance with approved waste disposal channels is essential to maintaining a clean and habitable environment.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous surveillance and enforcement, adding that operations would persist in various parts of the state to ensure adherence to environmental laws. Residents were urged to support the initiative by adopting responsible waste disposal practices.
