Premier League newcomers Leeds United have officially signed midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United in a deal reported to be worth up to £12 million.
While the Yorkshire club did not disclose the fee, multiple British outlets report that Leeds will pay an initial £10 million, with performance-based add-ons potentially increasing the total value to £12 million ($16 million). Longstaff has signed a four-year contract at Elland Road.
The 27-year-old midfielder leaves his boyhood club after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park. Despite making 171 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, Longstaff managed just eight starts in the league last season as he struggled for minutes behind the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali.
His arrival marks Leeds United’s fifth major signing of the summer transfer window, joining Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Gabriel Gudmundsson as part of manager Daniel Farke’s squad revamp.
Following their return to the top flight after winning the 2024/25 Championship title, Leeds are actively reinforcing their lineup in a bid to re-establish themselves in the Premier League.
The club, a dominant force in English football during the late 1960s and early 1970s, famously won the final edition of the First Division before the Premier League was introduced in 1992. Leeds now aim to revive that legacy by building a competitive team capable of thriving in England’s top tier once again.
