Abdulaziz Malami, the son of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has been rearrested by security operatives at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, barely moments after arrangements were concluded for his release on bail.
According to sources familiar with the development, officials from the Federal High Court had arrived at the correctional facility with fully processed bail documents to secure Abdulaziz’s release. However, shortly after he was handed over to court bailiffs, security agents reportedly stepped in and took him back into custody.
A source disclosed that the action followed fresh security intervention based on intelligence reports, with operatives said to have been monitoring movements in and out of the facility.
“He was released to the court bailiffs with all the necessary bail papers, but was immediately rearrested by security agents,” the source said.
Abdulaziz, alongside his father, Abubakar Malami, and his mother, Asabe Malami, is currently facing trial before Justice Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of money laundering involving N8.7 billion.
Earlier this month, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained an interim forfeiture order covering 57 landed properties allegedly linked to the Malami family. The assets, valued at about N213.23 billion, are spread across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano and Kaduna states.
Court documents indicate that some of the properties were connected to Abdulaziz Malami, his brother Abiru-Rahman Malami, and their mother, Asabe, as investigations into the alleged financial crimes continue.
Neither the security agencies involved nor the defence team has officially commented on the latest rearrest as of the time of filing this report.
