The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians to totally reject what it described as a distorted and falsified tax law, warning that flawed fiscal policies could deepen hardship and undermine public trust.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed the need for inclusiveness, transparency and fairness in the formulation of tax and other economic policies that directly affect workers and the wider population.

Ajaero said laws with far-reaching implications for workers must be carefully developed to avoid serious errors and political manipulation that could harm the majority of citizens.

The labour leader, in a statement titled “Our hope lies in collective action,” urged workers and Nigerians to unite in protecting their interests, including wages, pensions and dignity.

He also called for social and tax justice, insisting that every citizen should have access to quality healthcare, education and security, while workers’ rights and rewards are adequately protected.

“It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly co-created and owned than to rush into one riddled with serious errors and outright political manipulations,” Ajaero said.

He added that Nigerians must insist on a society where labour is fairly rewarded, rights are respected and lives and property are secured, allowing citizens to pursue their livelihoods without fear or intimidation.

Ajaero further emphasised that the strength of workers lies in unity and collective action, urging Nigerians to resist policies that inflict suffering and exploitation, while cautioning against divisions along ethnic, religious or regional lines.
