Norway’s royal family has been thrust into the spotlight after prosecutors formally charged Marius Borg Hoiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with 32 offences that include four counts of rape.

The 27-year-old, who is not a working member of the royal family, was first arrested in August 2024 after allegedly assaulting a girlfriend. Prosecutors now say their investigation uncovered a long list of offences dating back several years.

According to public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo, the charges involve domestic violence against a former partner, multiple violent incidents, harassment, vandalism, and repeated violations of restraining orders. Hoiby is also accused of secretly recording explicit videos of women without their consent.

“These are very serious acts that can destroy lives and cause permanent harm,” Henriksbo told AFP, adding that the maximum penalty for the charges is 10 years in prison. He emphasized that Hoiby’s family background will not influence the case: “He should neither receive lighter treatment nor harsher punishment because of his royal ties.”

Prosecutors allege the four rapes took place in 2018, 2023, and 2024, with one of the incidents occurring after the police investigation had already begun.

Hoiby has admitted to some of the charges, including assault and vandalism linked to the August 2024 incident that led to his arrest. Ten days after being detained, he issued a public statement saying he acted “under the influence of alcohol and cocaine following an argument,” while also acknowledging long-term struggles with substance abuse and mental health.

Though raised in the royal household alongside Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 19, Hoiby holds no official royal role. He became known to the public as a child when his mother married Crown Prince Haakon.

The case continues to generate widespread attention, not only because of the severity of the charges but also due to Hoiby’s royal connections. Legal experts say it could become one of Norway’s most closely watched trials in years.
