Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has expressed support for head coach Eric Chelle, following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles were eliminated after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final round of African playoffs, marking Chelle’s first loss since taking over as head coach.

Despite criticism surrounding the team’s World Cup exit, Oliseh praised Chelle’s efforts, acknowledging the coach’s dedication and impact on the squad. On his podcast, Oliseh admitted he was initially skeptical about Chelle’s appointment but has been impressed by his work.

“He has put in tremendous effort and achieved results that, in some ways, surpass what his predecessors accomplished,” Oliseh said.

Chelle will now focus on leading the Super Eagles into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations this December, as the team looks to rebuild and regain momentum ahead of future international competitions.
