As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains resilient and will bounce back stronger, despite the recent departure of prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Senator Moro, who represents Benue South, dismissed the exit of Atiku and Okowa from the party, calling it “good riddance to bad rubbish.” He accused both politicians of sowing division within the PDP following the party’s loss in the 2023 presidential election.
“The internal crisis that followed the 2023 election was fueled by their actions. Their departure is a step towards healing and restructuring the PDP,” Moro stated.
Despite the turbulence, the senator expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to regroup and re-emerge as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 polls. He called on dedicated party members to remain focused on the rebuilding process and not be discouraged by recent defections.
Addressing the ongoing debate around zoning and regional balance, Moro emphasized the importance of upholding Nigeria’s unwritten North-South power rotation. He warned political parties against fielding northern candidates again in 2027, noting that Nigerians had already rejected a northern-to-northern succession with Atiku’s failed 2023 bid to succeed former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, a political realignment appears to be taking shape, as major opposition figures—including Atiku, Peter Obi, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Nasir El-Rufai—have reportedly chosen the African Democratic Party (ADC) as a new platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nevertheless, Moro remains confident in the PDP’s potential to reclaim its influence and play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s political direction in the coming years.
