The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three individuals performing as masquerades over alleged unauthorised street displays and violent attacks that left several residents seriously injured.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, disclosed this on Monday while addressing journalists in Uyo, confirming that the arrests were made in Eket Local Government Area during the Ekid Day cultural celebration held on Saturday.

According to Azare, the masquerades allegedly assaulted members of the public, causing severe injuries that required hospitalisation. He said the victims are currently receiving medical care at undisclosed health facilities across the state.

The police chief said the arrests followed a violation of a recent executive order signed by Governor Umo Eno, which prohibits masquerades from operating on public streets without prior police approval and security arrangements.

Azare explained that although the state government respects cultural traditions, the restriction became necessary to address rising concerns over insecurity, public disorder and nuisance associated with some masquerade activities.

“The Command is enforcing the executive order of the Akwa Ibom State Government restricting masquerade activities to approved locations, with mandatory police permission and security coverage,” he said, noting that the measure has already led to a reduction in violence and unrest.

The commissioner recalled that in November, police arrested the leader of a masquerade group popularly known as Ekpo following allegations of criminal conduct, including attacks on residents, obstruction of a public highway and extortion.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining public safety while ensuring that cultural practices are carried out within the bounds of the law.
