The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken a bold step to clean up the Nigeria Police recruitment system by unveiling a whistleblowing policy aimed at exposing bribery, fraud, sexual exploitation, and other unethical practices.

The initiative, announced on Thursday in Abuja, seeks to dismantle a culture of corruption that has, for years, shut out qualified Nigerians while enriching compromised officials and recruitment middlemen. The PSC said the new policy reflects its zero-tolerance stance towards malpractice and its determination to build a police force rooted in merit, fairness, and professionalism.

“We want Nigerians to speak out against demands for bribes, manipulation of results, or sexual harassment in the recruitment process. Every credible report will be treated as a patriotic act and investigated thoroughly,” the Commission assured in a statement.

Officials emphasized that compromised recruitment undermines national security by producing compromised officers. The Commission linked the whistleblowing framework to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that restoring credibility to the Nigeria Police is central to rebuilding security and public trust in law enforcement.

The offences targeted under the policy include bribery, falsification of credentials with official collusion, sexual exploitation or extortion of applicants, impersonation during screening, insertion of “ghost” names, and other forms of misconduct.

To encourage participation, the PSC pledged that whistleblowers will be protected under Nigerian law from retaliation or victimisation. It released four dedicated hotlines — 08065265651, 08059544355, 09159329404, and 08035866677 — and urged citizens to provide as much detail as possible when submitting complaints, including names, dates, locations, and nature of the offence.

The Commission insisted that all verified reports will be investigated independently and swiftly, with offenders facing strict disciplinary and legal consequences.

In a message to Nigerians, the PSC called on the public to embrace the whistleblowing initiative as a civic responsibility that could strengthen policing and improve national security.

“A professional and trustworthy police force is the foundation of a safer Nigeria. Your courage can make the difference,” the statement concluded.
