The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns linked to the misuse of tinted vehicles.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on December 15 by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin. According to the police, the renewed enforcement will proceed despite ongoing legal discussions, as no court order currently restrains the Force from implementing existing laws on tinted glass usage.
Hundeyin clarified that the earlier suspension of enforcement was a voluntary measure aimed at giving motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
“At no time did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the law on tinted glass,” the statement said. “However, in the interest of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience, enforcement was temporarily suspended to allow motorists ample opportunity to comply.”
The police said recent security assessments have revealed a worrying rise in crimes involving vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Such vehicles, the Force noted, are frequently used by criminals to conceal their identities while carrying out offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing increase in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement added. “This gap has been exploited by individuals and organised criminal groups, making it imperative for the Force to resume full enforcement as a proactive security measure.”
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally and in line with the law, with due respect for citizens’ rights.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to public safety, the rule of law, and collaboration with stakeholders to enhance national security.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure that their vehicles fully comply with legal requirements ahead of the January 2 commencement date.
