Lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned N100,000 each that was credited to their personal bank accounts following directives from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi Aabo George. According to the statement, members of the 10th Assembly received bank alerts for the funds on December 30, 2025, without prior notice or legislative approval.
The Assembly described the transfers as unsolicited and unauthorised, noting that the funds were promptly refunded to the Rivers State Government upon discovery. Lawmakers stressed that all public spending must comply with constitutional provisions, including approval by the legislature.
The statement further accused the governor of repeatedly withdrawing funds from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account without legislative consent since assuming office, despite warnings from the Assembly and rulings by the Supreme Court. The lawmakers said such actions undermine constitutional order and the principle of separation of powers.
The incident comes amid ongoing political tensions in the state, particularly the renewed rift involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
