Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has revealed that health challenges and personal circumstances were responsible for the delayed release of her song Where You Dey, featuring fellow artiste Chike.
In a candid statement shared on her X (formerly Twitter) page on Friday, the award-winning singer explained that she had planned to release the track last year, shortly after teasing fans with a snippet that generated widespread excitement online.
However, Simi disclosed that the period was marked by serious physical struggles that left her unable to follow through with her plans.
“I was sick and weak and nauseous and tired, and my body just wouldn’t do what I wanted it to,” she said.
She revealed that even during the shoot for the teaser video of the song, she was unwell but pushed herself to deliver what fans saw online.
Simi also praised Chike, describing him as a long-admired collaborator whose voice and professionalism made him the ideal feature for the song. She said although Chike was initially out of town, he came to her studio immediately after returning, unaware that she was pregnant and dealing with severe physical exhaustion at the time.
Reflecting on the recording sessions, the singer said she remains surprised by the level of energy she displayed in the video, considering her condition during that period.
She further disclosed that she handled the mixing and mastering of the track herself, despite her long-standing dislike for mastering, explaining that circumstances left her with little choice.
“I hate mastering, so I don’t know what I was thinking,” she added.
Simi admitted that missing the intended release window was disappointing, especially after fans had already connected deeply with the song. She noted that her health challenges left her without the strength to promote the record properly or even recall parts of the content creation process.
Addressing persistent public speculation about her career, the singer said the eventual release of Where You Dey also serves as a response to claims that she abandoned her music career after getting married.
