Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening military intervention in Nigeria, calling the remarks “reckless” and poorly informed.
The literary icon spoke on Friday after meeting with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, noting that foreign leaders must respect Nigeria’s efforts to address its complex security challenges. “You don’t just open your mouth and say, ‘I’m coming to help you whether you like it or not… with guns blazing,’” Soyinka said. “At the very least, acknowledge those who are working to resolve this unacceptable situation.”
Soyinka also stressed the responsibility of governments to safeguard their citizens, emphasizing that victims of violence deserve dignity and respect.
The condemnation follows Trump’s October 31 designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for alleged attacks on Christians. The U.S. President later instructed the Defense Department to prepare for potential military action should Nigeria fail to curb violence against Christian communities.
