Nigerian singer and Grammy Award winner Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has joined the exclusive ranks of global music acts whose songs have surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.
The milestone was achieved through her global hit collaboration, Wait For U, with American rappers Future and Drake. The track, which continues to receive global acclaim, earned Tems the Spotify Billion plaque, officially recognising the achievement.
With this honour, Tems joins Afrobeats powerhouses Wizkid, Rema, and Tyla as one of the few African artists to reach the billion-stream mark on the streaming platform—cementing her status as one of the continent’s most-streamed female artists.
Released in 2022, Wait For U has proven to be a career-defining track for Tems. The song made history by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Tems the first African artist ever to achieve that feat. A year later, in 2023, the same track earned her a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Tems’ rapid rise in the global music industry has positioned her as a leading voice in the Afrobeats movement, and her Spotify milestone only reinforces her influence across global streaming charts.
