Nigerian music powerhouse Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming Africa’s best-selling female artist of all time.

In a remarkable rise that began just seven years ago, Tems has eclipsed industry legends like Angelique Kidjo, Tiwa Savage, and Yemi Alade, cementing her place in the history of African music. According to official chart data, the Grammy-winning artist has now sold over 25 million certified units worldwide, a feat unmatched by any other female act from the continent.

Tems’ global success is backed by a string of record-breaking hits and international collaborations. Among her biggest achievements:

  • “Essence” (with Wizkid) – Certified 5x Platinum in the United States (5 million units sold)
  • “Wait For U” (with Future and Drake) – 3x Platinum in the U.S. (3 million units)
  • “Free Mind”2x Platinum in the U.S. (2 million units)
  • “Higher”Platinum status in the U.S. (1 million units)

Beyond the U.S., Tems has also earned multiple Platinum and Gold certifications in major music markets such as the UK, Canada, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa—further underscoring her status as a truly global artist.

While Tems now leads the pack among African women, she still trails behind Cheb Khaled of Algeria, who holds the title of Africa’s best-selling artist overall with 81 million units sold. Nigeria’s Wizkid follows closely behind with 75 million units to his name.

Tems’ ascent to the top is not only a testament to her talent and vision but also a reflection of the global rise of Afrobeats and alternative African music. Her voice, often described as soulful and haunting, has become a defining sound of the new generation.

With her trajectory showing no signs of slowing down, Tems continues to break barriers and inspire a new wave of African artists striving for global excellence.
