Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to secure seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The milestone was achieved after her song “What You Need” debuted at No. 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total number of appearances on the prestigious chart to seven.

With the feat, Tems now equals Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African acts with the highest number of Billboard Hot 100 entries, at seven each.

In 2022, Tems became the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 through her collaboration with Future and Drake on the hit single “Wait For U.” The achievement marked a major breakthrough for African music on the global stage.

Industry watchers note that Tems could soon surpass the current record, as J. Cole’s “Bunce Road Blues,” featuring Tems and Future, is projected to debut on the chart next week.

Her latest accomplishment further cements her growing influence in the international music industry and underscores the expanding global reach of Afrobeats and African artistry.
