President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun after the police chief submitted a letter citing pressing family considerations.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on February 24 by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said the president expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s years of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year tenure scheduled to end in June 2027 in line with provisions of the amended Police Act.

Following the resignation, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

According to the presidency, the decision was taken in view of the prevailing security challenges facing the country and in accordance with existing legal provisions guiding leadership succession within the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement noted that the president is confident that Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity will provide stability and direction for the police during the transition period.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His nomination will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Further announcements are expected following the council’s deliberations.
