Nigeria’s track sensation, Tobi Amusan, reaffirmed her status as the nation’s queen of hurdles after storming to her fifth national 100m hurdles title at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held on Sunday at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.
The world record holder, known for her blistering starts, didn’t disappoint the Lagos crowd as she blazed through the finish line in 12.57 seconds, leaving no doubt about her dominance. Rising star Adaobi Tabugbo followed in 13.03 seconds, while Faith Osamuyi secured third place with a time of 13.36 seconds.
Amusan’s latest triumph adds another feather to her cap as she sharpens her form ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, this September.
In the men’s 400m, Gafar Badmus showcased sheer grit to emerge national champion, clocking a time of 45.71 seconds. He fended off competition from Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s), who finished second and third, respectively.
However, the women’s 400m race produced one of the day’s biggest surprises. Multiple-time champion Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the final, clearing the way for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah to snatch victory in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna claimed second and third positions in a dramatic showdown.
The sprint events also witnessed a new national champion emerge. Chioma Nweke, another African U-20 standout, toppled defending champion Olayinka Olajide in the women’s 100m final. Nweke clocked 11.27 seconds for her first national title, while Olajide (11.39s) and Iyanuoluwa Bada (11.45s) completed the podium.
An elated Nweke, said, “I’m overwhelmed with joy. It’s a dream come true to be crowned national champion.” She further added, “Next on my agenda is working hard to meet the qualification standards for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
As Nigeria’s athletics stars continue to shine, the AFN National Trials provided a glimpse into the country’s depth of talent heading into major international competitions.
