The Bluenergy Stadium in Italy will be the stage for one of European football’s most anticipated nights this Wednesday as Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head in the UEFA Super Cup final. It’s a battle between last season’s Champions League kings and the Europa League conquerors, with both sides aiming to etch their names in history.

For PSG, this is uncharted territory — their first appearance in a UEFA Super Cup final. Luis Enrique’s men stormed into the contest after a sensational 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final, with goals from Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Senny Mayulu sealing the deal. Tottenham’s path was narrower but equally decisive, as Brennan Johnson’s strike was enough to edge past Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

The two teams arrive in Italy with fresh storylines. Spurs will be without long-time talisman Son Heung-min, who shocked fans by swapping the Premier League for Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. But they’ve moved quickly to reinforce the squad, bringing in Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, João Palhinha, and Kevin Danso — signings manager Thomas Frank hopes can deliver a rare European trophy for the North London club. Their form in pre-season has been mixed: one win, one loss, and three draws against Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Luton Town, and Wycombe.

PSG’s summer has also seen changes. Milan Škriniar left for Fenerbahçe, Ilyes Housni joined Le Havre, and Lucas Chevalier signed for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup runners-up. Since losing to Chelsea in last month’s Club World Cup final in the United States, PSG haven’t played an official pre-season match — a fact some believe could affect their sharpness going into the final.

Isa Saleh, co-founder of the Borno Junior League, said he expects a fiercely contested match. “PSG will be cautious after losing to Chelsea. Tottenham might not have the strongest pre-season results, but they’ve been active, and that match fitness could make the difference. Still, PSG will want to respond — and I think they’ll edge it 2-1,” he predicted.

The UEFA Super Cup final kicks off at 8 p.m. Nigerian time, and with two attacking teams, high intensity, and the lure of European silverware, fans can expect a night of drama under the Italian lights.
