The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a trader following a violent altercation at the Fruit Market in Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, according to police authorities.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the dispute began when the trader, identified as 30-year-old Higightor Wenem from Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, reportedly asked a wheelbarrow pusher to move his wheelbarrow to create space for goods at the market. The victim was rushed to the Military Hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have been deposited at a morgue pending autopsy.
The incident reportedly sparked tension between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the area. However, police operatives swiftly intervened to restore calm and prevent further unrest.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody while investigations continue.
