Nigerian Afrobeats star Zinoleesky has revealed the personal sacrifices he made at the start of his music career, including running away from home to pursue his passion.
Speaking during a recent interview on the SB Live podcast, the singer recounted the challenges he faced growing up in a typical Nigerian household, where parents often discourage careers in entertainment.
“Nigerian parents are always in denial when it comes to careers like music. They want you to study a professional course or pick up a trade,” he said. “For me, I had to take matters into my own hands — I did some crazy things. I actually ran away from home to chase music.”
Zinoleesky, whose real name is Oniyide Azeez, began his musical journey as a rapper before transitioning into singing. His early freestyle videos, which gained traction online in 2017, catapulted him into public view and helped him build a loyal fanbase.
There were earlier reports suggesting he declined an offer from Davido’s DMW record label. However, in December 2019, he signed with Marlian Music, owned by street-pop artist Naira Marley.
His debut project Chrome Eccentric marked a breakthrough, featuring standout hits like “Ma Pariwo” and “Kilofeshe,” which solidified his presence in the Afrobeats landscape.
Zinoleesky continues to be one of the genre’s rising stars, known for his distinct vocal style and emotionally resonant lyrics.
