The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, has described Oyo State Governor and party presidential candidate Seyi Makinde as the most competent contender for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, citing his record in public office, transparency and accountability.

Daura made the declaration on Saturday while receiving leaders of the Northern Patriotic Front (NPF) at the APM presidential campaign headquarters in Abuja, where the group expressed support for the Makinde-Daura ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to Daura, Makinde’s experience in business and governance, coupled with what he described as his record of performance and responsible management of public resources, distinguishes him from other presidential aspirants.

He challenged Nigerians to assess political candidates based on their previous records, achievements and contributions to national development rather than ethnic, religious or other considerations.

Daura maintained that Nigeria could no longer afford to elect leaders without carefully examining their capacity to address the country’s persistent economic, security and social challenges.

He argued that public office seekers should be subjected to rigorous scrutiny, particularly regarding their management of public resources and their ability to deliver measurable results.

The APM vice-presidential candidate also reiterated the ticket’s commitment to establishing a four-year, all-inclusive transitional Government of National Unity if elected in 2027.

According to him, the proposed administration would focus on addressing Nigeria’s fundamental challenges, restoring public confidence in government and laying the groundwork for sustainable national development.

Makinde’s Four-Year Transitional Government Proposal

The proposed four-year government of national unity is a central element of Makinde’s presidential campaign.

The Oyo State governor has said that, if elected president, his administration would prioritise economic restructuring, improvements to the education sector, a new security architecture and reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s wider socio-political challenges.

Makinde has presented the proposed administration as a transitional government designed to bring together Nigerians from different regions and political backgrounds to address longstanding national problems.

He has also argued that the country requires a different approach to governance, with greater emphasis on public consultation, transparency and policies that produce measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.

Daura reaffirmed that the arrangement would not extend beyond four years, describing it as an opportunity to establish a stronger foundation for long-term national development.

The proposal is particularly significant to the ticket’s engagement with Northern political stakeholders, whom the candidates have sought to reassure about their commitment to inclusive governance and national representation.

However, the practical implementation of such an arrangement would depend on the policies adopted by an elected administration, the composition of its government and its ability to secure cooperation across Nigeria’s political institutions.

Northern Stakeholders Express Support

The Northern Patriotic Front delegation expressed support for Makinde’s presidential ambition, with its leaders pointing to his record as Oyo State governor as a factor informing their position.

The group’s support provides the APM ticket with an opportunity to strengthen its engagement with political stakeholders in Northern Nigeria ahead of the election.

Daura welcomed the delegation and urged political actors to promote public enlightenment, encourage informed electoral choices and assess candidates on the basis of their records.

He also argued that Nigeria’s continuing challenges require serious-minded leaders who can move beyond political promises and deliver tangible improvements.

The Challenge Ahead of 2027

Makinde’s presidential ambition places his record in Oyo State under greater national scrutiny, particularly as voters consider the performance of candidates who have previously held executive office.

For the APM, the challenge will be to translate its proposed national renewal agenda into a detailed and credible programme addressing inflation, employment, security, education, healthcare and the cost of living.

The proposed four-year transitional government will also require clarity on how national unity would be achieved, how different political interests would be represented and which reforms would receive priority.

Daura’s endorsement of Makinde as the most competent candidate reflects the APM ticket’s campaign position. The ultimate judgment, however, will rest with voters, who will compare the candidates’ records, policy proposals and capacity to govern.

As political activity gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, the Makinde-Daura ticket is positioning competence, accountability and national unity at the centre of its campaign.
