The Nigeria Police Force has barred the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, vigilante groups and other non-state security outfits from participating in security operations for Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
The directive comes ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship poll as security agencies intensify preparations to prevent violence and other disruptions during the election.
The police said non-state security groups have no role in election security operations, including escorting election materials, mounting checkpoints or guarding polling units.
The affected groups include Amotekun, vigilante organisations, hunters’ associations, neighbourhood watch groups and other community-based security formations.
The Nigeria Police Force said only authorised security agencies should participate in election security duties.
The decision is part of a broader security arrangement for the election, which has attracted heightened political attention following allegations and counter-allegations between the major political camps.
The police have also warned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against conduct capable of triggering violence.
The August 15 election is expected to be closely contested, with the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking another term against the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, among other contenders.
The police restriction is intended to ensure that election security remains under the control of recognised and authorised security agencies.
