Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has commenced a fresh legal challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, where he deposed to an affidavit supporting a suit seeking to challenge Tinubu’s qualification for the next presidential election.
The case centres on allegations concerning the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate submitted in connection with Tinubu’s presidential candidacy.
According to reports on the suit, the plaintiffs are asking the court to disqualify Tinubu from contesting the 2027 election over allegations relating to the authenticity and details contained in the certificate.
The legal action marks a significant escalation in the political contest between Tinubu and Atiku ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, is now the presidential candidate of the ADC following the opposition realignment ahead of 2027.
The former vice president’s latest move comes amid a broader effort by opposition politicians to challenge the Tinubu administration politically and legally ahead of the next general election.
The case is expected to draw considerable attention as the parties present their arguments before the Federal High Court.
