President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has predicted that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will eventually endorse Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
Bwala’s claim comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition politicians and parties working to establish a coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The presidential aide made the prediction while discussing the changing political landscape and the movement of politicians across Nigeria’s major political parties.
According to Bwala, the political developments ahead of 2027 could ultimately lead Obi to support Tinubu rather than continue with the opposition.
The claim, however, remains Bwala’s political prediction. There is no indication from the available evidence that Obi has announced an intention to endorse Tinubu.
Obi remains one of the most prominent opposition figures in Nigeria following his third-place finish in the 2023 presidential election, during which he contested on the platform of the Labour Party.
His campaign attracted significant support, particularly among younger voters, and his political movement has remained influential since the election.
The former Anambra State governor has also been associated with efforts to build a stronger opposition platform ahead of 2027.
The political landscape has changed significantly since 2023, with opposition politicians exploring alliances and new platforms ahead of the next presidential contest.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has emerged as a major platform in those discussions, attracting several prominent opposition figures.
The emerging coalition has intensified speculation about the eventual presidential candidate who will challenge Tinubu.
Bwala’s prediction therefore comes at a time when political alignments are fluid and parties are still positioning themselves ahead of the election.
For the APC, the movement of opposition politicians toward the ruling party would potentially strengthen Tinubu’s re-election bid.
For the opposition, however, maintaining unity among politicians with different ambitions remains one of the biggest challenges ahead of 2027.
Obi’s political position is particularly significant because of the support he commands among voters who backed him in 2023.
Any decision by him to endorse another presidential candidate would therefore carry considerable political implications.
But as of now, there is no verified announcement from Obi confirming that he intends to endorse Tinubu.
Bwala’s statement should consequently be viewed as a prediction rather than an announcement of an agreement between the two politicians.
The claim is also part of a broader political argument by Tinubu’s allies that the opposition coalition lacks the cohesion required to defeat the APC.
The opposition, meanwhile, has continued to insist that Nigerians are seeking an alternative to the ruling party.
With the 2027 election still ahead, further political defections, endorsements and alliances are expected as parties prepare for primaries and the eventual campaign season.
Whether Obi eventually endorses Tinubu, contests against him or supports another opposition candidate remains to be determined.
For now, Bwala has put the possibility into the political conversation, but the final decision remains with Obi.
