President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
The appointment takes effect from August 27, 2026, according to the announcement concerning the appointment.
Enitan’s appointment places him at the head of Nigeria’s federal civil service, where he will be responsible for overseeing the administrative machinery of the Federal Government and coordinating the implementation of civil service reforms.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation is one of the most important positions within Nigeria’s public administration system.
The office is responsible for providing leadership across the federal civil service and ensuring that government ministries, departments and agencies operate in accordance with established administrative rules and policies.
Enitan’s appointment comes at a time when the Tinubu administration is pursuing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and performance within government.
The Federal Government has repeatedly emphasised the need to modernise the public service and improve the quality of service delivery to Nigerians.
The new Head of Service will therefore inherit an institution facing demands for greater efficiency while also dealing with issues surrounding public-sector productivity, digital transformation, staff welfare and administrative reform.
His appointment is expected to bring his previous administrative experience to the centre of the Federal Government’s civil service reform agenda.
The transition will formally take effect on August 27.
The appointment also comes as the administration continues to make changes across key government institutions as it enters another phase of its programme.
The Head of Service plays a particularly important role because the office operates across virtually every part of the federal government’s administrative structure.
Unlike political office holders, senior civil servants are expected to provide institutional continuity regardless of political changes.
The office therefore requires strong administrative coordination and an understanding of public-sector management.
Enitan’s appointment will consequently be closely watched by civil servants and public-sector stakeholders.
The development also comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, although the Head of Service is a career administrative position rather than an elected political office.
The Federal Government is expected to continue implementing reforms in areas including performance management, digitalisation and institutional efficiency.
The new Head of Service will be central to those efforts once he assumes office.
More details about his mandate and transition arrangements are expected as the August 27 commencement date approaches.
