Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory in the National Assembly, has accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of obtaining loans for the capital territory without securing approval from the National Assembly.
Kingibe made the allegation during an interview with Channels Television, where she discussed the administration of the FCT, the Abuja Master Plan and the oversight responsibilities of lawmakers.
According to the senator, records from the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed that loans had been obtained for the FCT between August 2023 and March 2026.
She questioned how such borrowing could have taken place without the minister appearing before the Senate to seek the required legislative approval.
Kingibe said she had already brought the issue to the attention of the Senate leadership.
She maintained that although Wike had appeared before the Senate FCT Committee, she had not seen him appear before the full Senate to request approval for borrowing.
The allegation comes amid continuing political disagreements between Kingibe and the FCT administration over the management of Abuja.
Importantly, Kingibe’s claims are allegations and do not, on their own, establish that any borrowing by the FCT was unlawful. Wike and the FCT Administration’s response to the specific allegation would be necessary before drawing a definitive conclusion.
