The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-KASU) has threatened an indefinite strike over unresolved demands relating to staff welfare and implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union previously issued a two-week ultimatum to the university management and relevant authorities, warning that failure to address its demands could lead to a comprehensive and indefinite industrial action.
ASUU-KASU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, said more than 200 professors and other academic staff had left the institution amid concerns over conditions of service and the failure to implement the 2025 agreement.
The union said the agreement, which was expected to take effect from January 2026, had not been implemented at KASU.
Among the issues raised are promotion arrears, university autonomy, excessive workload, death benefits, group life insurance, wage-related matters and pension remittances.
ASUU warned that the continued departure of experienced academic staff could have serious consequences for the university’s academic capacity.
However, the dispute has also seen movement from the Kaduna State Government.
The state government recently established a nine-member committee to negotiate with ASUU-KASU and other staff unions over their outstanding demands.
It also approved N300 million as Earned Academic Allowance for university staff as part of efforts to address welfare concerns and maintain industrial harmony.
The intervention has opened a possible path toward resolving the dispute without a prolonged shutdown.
ASUU-KASU has previously indicated that it remains willing to negotiate with the government, suggesting that dialogue could prevent the situation from escalating.
The dispute nevertheless highlights wider challenges confronting Nigerian public universities, including staff retention, funding, welfare and implementation of negotiated agreements.
For KASU, the immediate priority is preventing the loss of additional academic staff and resolving the outstanding issues before the union’s ultimatum translates into an indefinite strike.
