A fresh attack on motorists along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Kogi State has left an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain dead and another passenger abducted, according to the Kogi State Police Command.
The incident occurred at about 5pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
Police said armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire at motorists travelling along the highway.
A blue Toyota Corolla was subsequently found abandoned on the road.
Inside the vehicle, security operatives discovered the body of a man identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa.
Yunusa was identified by the police as a divisional chairman of the APC in Dekina Local Government Area.
The police said another occupant of the vehicle was taken into the surrounding bush by the attackers.
SECURITY OPERATIONS UNDERWAY
Following the attack, the Kogi State Police Command said it had intensified operations in collaboration with other security agencies to locate the abducted passenger and apprehend those responsible.
Personnel were deployed to comb the surrounding forest in an effort to trace the victim and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The deceased was evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy.
Police said investigators were also pursuing available leads as part of efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers.
HIGHWAY SECURITY CONCERNS
The incident adds to continuing security concerns along major roads in Kogi State, where travellers and motorists have faced the threat of armed attacks and abductions.
The Itobe–Ochadamu corridor is an important road connecting communities within the state, making security along the route a significant concern for residents and road users.
While initial accounts have described the attackers as gunmen, the police statement cited in current reports did not establish their identity or affiliation.
Authorities have also not announced any arrests in connection with the attack as of the latest update.
The police said further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
