The media office of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over what it described as a coordinated campaign aimed at damaging his reputation among voters in parts of Northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Peter Obi Media Office alleged that individuals were circulating what it described as false claims about Obi’s relationship with Northerners during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
The office said the alleged campaign was being conducted through conversations and gatherings in some rural Northern communities, where it claimed the accusations were being repeated without supporting evidence.
The statement was signed by the spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Office, Idris Zekeri Jnr.
According to the media office, the allegations have continued despite what it described as previous denials from Northern leaders in Anambra State.
The office argued that political competition should not be based on ethnic divisions or unverified claims, particularly as political parties begin intensifying their campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
It also challenged those allegedly behind the campaign to provide names, dates, records and other verifiable evidence to support their claims.
The development comes as Obi and the NDC increasingly target voters beyond their traditional political strongholds.
Northern Nigeria is expected to play a decisive role in the 2027 presidential election, making perceptions of presidential candidates among voters in the region particularly significant.
The claims about the alleged whisper campaign remain allegations made by Obi’s media office; the office did not publicly identify the individuals allegedly responsible in the reports reviewed.
