The Federal Government has approved ₦10 billion for the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Cycle administered by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The funding is designed to support research projects across Nigerian public tertiary institutions and is expected to strengthen research, innovation and knowledge development in the country.
TETFund has opened the 2026 National Research Fund cycle and invited researchers to submit concept notes through its National Research Fund application platform. The agency lists the National Research Fund among its major interventions for improving the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria.
The 2026 research programme covers priority areas across three broad categories: Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting research areas.
The thematic focus is intended to encourage research addressing issues relevant to Nigeria’s economic development, social welfare, governance, technology, security, infrastructure and other national priorities.
TETFund’s National Research Fund is specifically designed to provide funding for research carried out by eligible researchers in public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The agency’s research framework encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary projects, with researchers from different academic fields able to collaborate on projects addressing complex national challenges.
Researchers seeking to participate in the 2026 cycle are required to register through the National Research Fund electronic platform and submit their concept notes in accordance with the programme’s guidelines.
The application platform identifies researchers as principal investigators and provides for the submission of both concept notes and, where applicable, full research proposals.
The latest funding commitment comes amid continuing calls for stronger investment in research and development as Nigeria seeks to improve the quality of its tertiary institutions and strengthen the contribution of universities and other higher institutions to national development.
Through the 2026 grant cycle, the government and TETFund are seeking to channel research funding towards projects capable of generating knowledge, innovation and practical solutions to challenges facing the country.
