President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced a three-week annual vacation in Europe, departing Abuja on Sunday as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President’s departure was announced by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu’s first destination is London, United Kingdom, where he will begin the vacation described by the Presidency as part of his annual leave.
Onanuga said the President is expected to return to Nigeria after the working vacation and participate in activities surrounding the January 2027 general elections.
The vacation comes at a politically significant period, with preparations for the next general election already gathering momentum and political parties stepping up their campaigns and mobilisation.
The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections will follow on February 6.
Tinubu’s three-week absence from the country therefore comes as political parties continue to position themselves ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential contest.
The Presidency has described the trip as a normal annual leave rather than a break from governance, with the President expected to resume official activities after his return.
The announcement has nevertheless generated political interest because of the timing of the vacation, particularly as the administration faces increasing scrutiny over its economic reforms, political alliances and preparations for the 2027 election.
Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the vacation and continue his official engagements as well as activities connected with the forthcoming election.
