The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has suffered a fresh political setback following the defection of party members to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest movement is part of a series of political realignments taking place across the country as parties begin strengthening their structures and mobilising support ahead of the next general election.
Reports from Kano indicated that several APC members have moved to the NDC, with defectors pledging their support for the opposition platform.
Kano is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most politically important states because of its large electorate and significant influence on northern politics.
The state is therefore expected to play a major role in determining the strength of presidential candidates and political parties in 2027.
The latest defections come at a time when the opposition is attempting to build stronger structures capable of challenging the ruling APC.
However, while defections can strengthen a political party’s grassroots structure, they do not automatically translate into electoral victory. The ability of the receiving party to mobilise voters and sustain its new political structures will ultimately determine the significance of the movement.
The APC and opposition parties are expected to intensify their activities in Kano and other politically strategic states as the 2027 election approaches.
