The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N1.23 trillion, $684.48 million, £373,905.78 and €9.34 million between October 1, 2023, and June 30, 2026, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has disclosed.

The figures represent recoveries made by the anti-graft agency during the period under review as part of its efforts to tackle economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.

The EFCC has, under Olukoyede, continued to place significant emphasis on asset recovery, financial investigations and the prosecution of individuals suspected of involvement in fraud, money laundering, corruption and other financial offences.

The scale of the reported recovery is significant, particularly given the different currencies involved and the volume of investigations being handled by the commission.

However, recoveries by an anti-corruption agency should not automatically be interpreted as proof that every person or organisation connected to a particular recovery has been convicted of a crime. Investigations, prosecutions and convictions remain separate stages of the legal process.

The EFCC has also expanded its focus beyond traditional financial fraud to areas including cybercrime, illicit financial flows and money laundering.

Olukoyede has repeatedly called for stronger cooperation among government institutions and greater public support for the commission’s efforts to recover proceeds allegedly obtained through illegal activities.

The latest figures come amid continued public debate over corruption, accountability and the management of public resources in Nigeria.

The commission’s asset-recovery activities have also generated debate over what happens to recovered funds and assets, including the need for transparency in the management and eventual utilisation of recovered public resources.

The EFCC is expected to continue pursuing major financial investigations as part of the Federal Government’s wider anti-corruption agenda.
