Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has apologised to Nigerian security personnel following controversial remarks he made at the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference.
VeryDarkMan issued the apology after facing criticism over comments he made during his appearance at the conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
During his speech, the activist referred to soldiers, police officers, immigration and customs personnel as “unknown gunmen” while discussing insecurity in the country.
VDM Makes U-Turn
In a video shared on Friday, VeryDarkMan acknowledged that his comments had been too broad and could have been interpreted as an attack on security personnel who are genuinely working to protect Nigerians.
He apologised specifically to soldiers, policemen, customs officers and immigration personnel.
According to reports, he said he had reflected on his remarks and recognised that it was unfair to generalise the actions of individuals to entire security institutions.
‘Bad Eggs’ Within Security Agencies
While apologising, VeryDarkMan maintained that his criticism was directed at individuals he believes have failed in their responsibilities rather than every member of Nigeria’s security agencies.
He has previously used his social media platforms to criticise alleged misconduct and failures by government institutions.
His latest apology appears to be an attempt to clarify that position while acknowledging the sacrifices made by security personnel.
Controversial NBA Speech
VeryDarkMan’s appearance at the NBA conference generated considerable attention because of his outspoken comments about insecurity and governance.
The activist has developed a large following through his online campaigns, often confronting public officials and institutions over issues he believes require greater accountability.
However, his approach has also repeatedly attracted controversy.
The “unknown gunmen” comment was particularly sensitive because security agencies have suffered significant casualties during Nigeria’s prolonged fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.

His decision to apologise marks a significant shift from the tone of his original comments.
The activist’s latest position was welcomed by some Nigerians who had criticised the statement, while others continued to debate whether the apology adequately addressed the concerns raised by security personnel.
