The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has selected former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, as its candidate for the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election.
Adamu emerged from a fresh replacement primary conducted by the party in Nasarawa State on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
His emergence followed the withdrawal of the party’s previously nominated governorship candidate, Musa Adamu Angba.
Former Police Chief Wins Ticket
Adamu was declared the winner of the replacement primary after the exercise was conducted across the state’s 13 local government areas.
The SDP’s electoral committee subsequently collated the results in Lafia, the state capital.
Reports said Adamu was the sole aspirant in the replacement exercise and secured the delegates’ support to emerge as the party’s flag bearer.
Why SDP Conducted A Fresh Primary
The fresh primary became necessary after the withdrawal of the party’s previously selected candidate.
The SDP had earlier announced that it would conduct replacement primaries in Nasarawa and Gombe states and invited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the process.
The party said the exercise was required to substitute candidates who had withdrawn from the 2027 governorship contest.
Adamu’s Political Ambition
Mohammed Abubakar Adamu served as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police before entering partisan politics.
His emergence gives the SDP a candidate with a long background in national security and policing as it prepares to contest the Nasarawa governorship election.
The former police chief had already expressed confidence in his ability to contest the election despite his earlier omission from INEC’s published list of recognised governorship candidates for the state.
SDP Begins 2027 Campaign
The party is expected to begin broader mobilisation around Adamu’s candidacy as the 2027 election approaches.
Nasarawa is likely to attract significant political attention, with the major parties expected to intensify their campaigns across the state’s 13 local government areas.
Adamu’s selection now gives the SDP a new flag bearer as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the state ahead of the governorship contest.
