The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The endorsement was announced by the President-General of the conference, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, during the grand finale of the CBCN’s 2026 Synod in Abuja on Wednesday.
Kawas said the organisation had assessed the administration’s policies, appointments and approach to issues of national development before arriving at its decision.
According to reports from the event, the conference had initially expressed concerns about the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket that produced Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in 2023.
However, Kawas said the administration’s subsequent appointments and policies had influenced the organisation’s assessment of the government.
The cleric declared that the conference would support Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election through prayers, advocacy and public engagement.
The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, which reported the development, quoted Kawas as saying the conference had formally endorsed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
The synod also featured an appeal by Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris for religious leaders to use their influence to promote peace, national unity and responsible democratic participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Idris urged religious organisations to contribute to education, healthcare, youth development, humanitarian intervention and peacebuilding.
He also cautioned against portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a religious conflict, noting that terrorist and criminal groups have attacked Nigerians across religious lines.
The endorsement adds the CBCN to the growing list of groups and political actors already taking positions ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
