Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has called for the North to respect Nigeria’s longstanding political understanding on the rotation of presidential power between the northern and southern parts of the country.
Buni said the principle of fairness should guide political decisions ahead of the 2027 presidential election and allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete a second term in office.
The governor’s position amounts to an endorsement of Tinubu’s bid for re-election and places him among northern political leaders advocating continuity for the current administration.
The debate over zoning and rotational presidency has remained a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
Although rotational presidency is not a constitutional requirement, political parties and political leaders have frequently used it as an informal mechanism for managing Nigeria’s regional and ethnic diversity.
Buni’s comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections and opposition groups attempt to build a coalition capable of challenging the governing All Progressives Congress.
The Yobe governor has previously been identified with efforts to strengthen the APC’s northern political structure and has been involved in mobilisation efforts around Tinubu’s re-election bid.
His latest comments therefore reinforce the growing campaign within APC circles for Tinubu to secure a second term.
