The Labour Party has confirmed Engineer Haliru Abubakar Dikko as its candidate for the 2027 Sokoto State governorship election following a substitution primary.
The Labour Party has affirmed Engineer Haliru Abubakar Dikko as its candidate for the 2027 Sokoto State governorship election.
Dikko emerged from a substitution primary conducted by the party in Sokoto following the withdrawal of its earlier candidate.
The state chairman of the Labour Party, Abubakar Yawale, declared the exercise valid, saying it was conducted with Dikko’s knowledge and consent and in the presence of officials from relevant government agencies.
The development gives the Labour Party a new candidate as preparations intensify for the 2027 governorship contest in Sokoto.
Substitution of candidates has become an increasingly important feature of Nigerian electoral politics, particularly as political parties adjust their tickets following withdrawals, internal negotiations or changes in political alliances.
For the Labour Party, the challenge will now be to consolidate its organisation behind Dikko and build an electoral structure capable of competing in a state where the major political parties have traditionally maintained strong networks.
The confirmation also comes as parties across Nigeria continue to reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dikko’s emergence will place the Labour Party’s Sokoto structure under renewed scrutiny as voters assess the candidates and platforms seeking control of the state.
